North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Miler – Pre-Race Report and Packing List

By on May 29, 2013

I can’t believe I only have 3 more days until my very first ultramarathon!!! My excitement knows no bounds but the nerves are also starting to set in. In the past, I’ve had issues with self-doubt during long races where I actually care about the outcome. For my first 50 mile attempt I’ve set a huge goal for myself, a sub-9 hour finish (with a backup goal of sub-11 hour and a backup backup goal of sub-13 hours so I’ve an official finisher). I’ve made pace charts for my goals and both of my backups and I think the sub-9 hour goal is doable, although that is just pure guesswork since I’ve never run farther than 26 miles in training and my only marathon race attempt took me 7:38:52 (with a twisted ankle).

Here’s the elevation profile of the race:

Although it looks steep, there is only 4,656 gain/loss for the entire course. I do more than that on my long runs in only 16 miles instead of 50. I’m feeling confident, especially after my performance at the BolderBoulder and my two most recent long runs, which I finished feeling really strong.

In addition to running a new distance, I’m also traveling back to DC for the race, which will require a whole new dimension of planning. I’ve split up my packing/planning into 3 categories:

  • Clothing/Gear I need to bring from CO
  • Non-Clothing/Gear I need to bring from CO (mostly food)
  • Food I need to get in DC

So here are my packing lists:

Clothing/Gear from CO

Can you tell I’m a little obsessed with Salomon and Patagonia right now?

Non-Clothing/Gear from CO
Food from DC
That’s my packing list so far. I might add/edit some things in the next couples day before I leave. Hopefully everything works out. By the way, I looked up the weather (stupid Sam) and this is the forecast for the weekend.
I really wish I didn’t look that up :-(. Also here is the picture of my rice bars (I had to try them out to make sure they were good!):
There is (from left to right) dark chocolate sea salt, banana-chocolate-walnut, and banana-peanut butter-coconut. Some of these will end up in the freezer since I don’t want to bring all of them with me to DC. Well as Bug’s Bunny would say “That’s all for now, folks!” Wish me luck and I’ll report back after the race!!
